Thoreau Canoe Trips in Northern Maine
Two Thoreau Wilderness Canoe trips in Northern Maine are scheduled annually:
- July: TBD
- September: TBD
- See also "Custom Trips"
Scheduled Trip Details
These trips cover the West Branch of the Penobscot River and stop at many of the sites visited by Thoreau. Fishing along the way is possible. Groups that are too large may be split into two sections. We will have a registered Maine guide for every six to eight people on the trip. Here are more details about the guided canoe trips:
- There are a series of five mandatory briefing sessions (45-minute videos through Zoom or otherwise, usually 7:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday after the close of registration).
- We wish to confirm the entire group after the second briefing session. Once formed, the trip can be lengthened or shortened depending on the group’s choice.
- TMWC will provide canoes, tents, paddles, meals, and wilderness access fees. Each participant should provide all personal clothing, including PFDs (life jackets), shoes, rain gear, packs, fishing license, and gear. Clear guidance on personal gear will be given in the briefing sessions.
- Kayaks cannot be used; each canoe will carry a portion of the group gear as assigned by their guide.
- The minimum group size is two people, but three or four is a better minimum. For futher details, please inquire.
Non-Refundable Deposit for Adults
A non-refundable deposit of $200 per adult (children excluded) is required at signup. Typical trip fees range from $300 to $400+ per day per adult. Children are exempt from some land use fees that depend on family structure.
Trips Tailored to Your Skill Level
Each trip will be tailored to the group’s skill level. No prior skill is required as instruction will be given before and during the trip. We do use our arms rather vigorously each day. All we ask is an open, enthusiastic mind with a joyful spirit ready for the lovely outdoors.
Custom Trips
We can arrange trips for between 3 and 10 people lasting 4 to 10 days for any canoeing on Maine inland waterways. Non-canoeing trips are also possible, especially for people with disabilities who want to be exposed to the Maine Woods with guided access to the backcountry. We also offer
driving and camping trips for smaller groups.
You might consider our level walking trails, AMC cabins (nearby), a night sky adventure, motorized boat trips on Moosehead Lake, or even floatplane excursions over this gorgeous region. And, of course, a trip aboard the Katadyn, a diesel-powered steam-era ship that still plies 40-mile Moosehead Lake, is always popular and can be arranged, on a space-available basis.
