Canoe Trips for Every Skill Level
Our trips, priced at $200 per day, are customized to suit your skill level. There's no need for previous experience, as we provide instruction both before and during your adventure. While you'll be actively engaged, all we ask is that you bring an open, enthusiastic mindset and a joyful spirit to embrace the beauty of the outdoors.
Canoe Trip Preparation Guide
Prepare for an unforgettable adventure along the West Branch of the Penobscot River, immersing yourself in the natural beauty and rich history that inspired Thoreau. Below are essential details to help you get ready for your journey:
Guided Experience
Each trip will feature a registered Maine guide for every six to eight participants.
Briefing Sessions
Attend five mandatory briefing sessions, typically held via Zoom from 7:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on Wednesdays after registration closes.
Confirm group details after the second briefing, with flexibility to adjust trip length based on preferences.
Included Amenities
Thoreau Maine Woods Canoeing, LLC. provides canoes, tents, paddles, meals, and wilderness access fees.
Participants must bring personal items, including clothing, PFDs (life jackets), shoes, rain gear, packs, fishing licenses, and gear. Specific guidance on personal gear will be provided during briefing sessions.
Canoe Only
Please note that kayaks are not permitted. Each canoe will be responsible for carrying the assigned group's gear.
Group Requirements
A minimum group size of six participants is required to proceed with the trip.

Customizable Group Adventures
We offer trips for groups of 4 to 10 people, lasting from 4 to 10 days, exploring Maine’s inland waterways. Non-canoeing options are available, especially for individuals with disabilities seeking guided access to the backcountry. We also provide driving and camping trips for smaller groups. Choose from July or September dates, or arrange a custom itinerary. Note that the displayed price is for the deposit of your chosen trip.
Consider enhancing your experience with level walking trails, nearby AMC cabins, or night sky adventures. Enjoy motorized boat trips on Moosehead Lake, floatplane excursions, or a journey aboard the Katadyn, a popular diesel-powered steam-era ship. These can be arranged based on availability.
Non-Refundable Deposit for Adults
A non-refundable deposit of $200 per adult is required at signup, while children are exempt from this fee. Typical trip costs range from $300 to $400+ per day per adult. Additionally, children may benefit from exemptions on certain land use fees, depending on family structure.
